On December 28, 2014, Mary Kathryn Thompson Muench, formerly of Terre Haute, went home to be with the Lord. She was born February 22, 1922, in Riley, Indiana, the only child of Eva (Crist) and Roy Thompson. At age 14 the family moved to Hymera where Kathryn met a young man who in 1946 became her husband, Raymond Eugene Muench, CPA who preceded her in death (‘78). She attended Indiana State Teachers College, now ISU, receiving her degree in music, teaching in Vigo and Sullivan County and as a private piano instructor. Her passion was teaching class piano lessons. Many students, including her daughters, dedicated themselves to two classes weekly as she prepared them for a solid background in theory and piano. Cheryl, her daughter, became an outstanding church pianist, performing major solo works. A number of Kathryn’s students continued their studies as music majors in college, including daughter Rhonda who has bachelor and master degrees in music and holds the prestigious National Board Certificated Teaching credentials in music education. Kathryn was an active member of Bible Baptist Church where she loved playing for services and the music honorary, Sigma Alpha Iota. In her later years, a high school friendship was rekindled with Robert Gouckenour. They were extremely close, enjoying each other’s company and many wonderful times together for over 10 years. He too preceded her in death. In 2009, with health failing, she moved to an assisted living unit in Virginia, closer to granddaughters Shannon and Brandy and in the spring of 2014, to a nursing home in Kentucky close to granddaughter Amy and daughter Cheryl. She spent her last years close to her family in Virginia and Kentucky and visits from family in Texas, bringing her much joy and comfort, as she watched her many great-grandchildren being brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. Many heartfelt thanks to Cheryl, Amy, Shannon, and Brandy for their tireless work in caring, comforting, and overseeing her affairs the last 5 years. She is survived by 2 daughters, 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, they are as follows: Cheryl (Muench) and Randy Gilbert of Lawrenceburg, KY and their 4 children Brandy, Shannon, Amy and Dustin.
