James A. "Jim" Porter, 84, of West Terre Haute, passed away Saturday, Sept. 9, 2017, in his residence surrounded by his family. Jim was born Sept. 7, 1933, in Terre Haute, to James W. Porter and Olive Johnson Porter. Jim was a graduate of Wiley High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the 5th Army Division and in the military police. Jim retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he worked as a passport agent. Jim was a charter member of the Wabash Valley Model "A" Club and the Classic Chevy Club of Terre Haute. He was a lifelong car enthusiast enjoying and attending car shows and swap meets with his family throughout his lifetime. Jim was a founding member of Fort Minglewood Long Rifles Club where he enjoyed going to Friendship and rendezvous. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Olive Porter; and his wife, Joan Huston Porter, who passed away on Friday, Sept. 16, 2016, after 63 years of marriage, they were apart only a brief time. Jim is survived by his three children, Douglas Porter and his wife Cindy of West Terre Haute, Eleanor Rodie and her husband Frank of West Terre Haute and Megan Miller and her husband David of Dennison, Ill. He is survived by one sister, Mary Lou Brown and her husband Don; and a brother, Billy Porter and his wife Lynn. He is survived by eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren with one great grandchild due to arrive in December. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at 6 p.m. at Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 N. 13th St., Terre Haute, IN., 47804. A gathering for family and friends will be from 4 until 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery at a later date. The immediate family would like to thank all family and friends that helped during this difficult time. They would also like to thank Kindred Hospice and Hands that Serve for the care that was given during this time.
