Lela Sale, age 91, of Huntington, died at 7:47 p.m. Monday, September 17, 2018 at Heritage Pointe of Huntington.

Visitation will be from 3 – 7 p.m. Friday, September 21, 2018 at Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Salamonie Church of the Brethren, 2262 West 600 South, Warren, with Pastor Mel Zumbrun officiating. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory in Huntington County.

Preferred memorials are to Salamonie Church of the Brethren or Parkview Huntington Hospital Foundation – Holly D. Sale Rehabilitation and Wellness Center, in care of Bailey-Love Mortuary, 35 West Park Drive, Huntington, Indiana, 46750.

Lela was born on February 21, 1927 in Wabash County, the daughter of Reuben and Dorthea (Gimmer) Schenkel. She graduated from Urbana High School in 1945 and married Robert L. Sale on February 17, 1952 in Huntington County; he preceded her in death on February 14, 2004 after 52 years of marriage. Lela was known by all for the 29 years she spent as the Lancaster Elementary School Librarian. She loved all her students; in fact, when a senior graduated, they received a card congratulating them and she inserted a note encouraging them to “seek God for guidance.” Lela was a member of Salamonie Church of the Brethren and volunteered at Parkview Huntington Hospital for many years She enjoyed sewing and quilting. She also loved reading and gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Peggy (Paul) Eickhoff of Marion, sons Mark Sale of Huntington and Paul (Cindy) Sale of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and granddaughters Taylor Berninger and Kendall Sale. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers Hayden Schenkel, Wallace Schenkel, and Leon Schenkel, sisters Ada Marie Ulrich and Inez Hagenbuch, brothers-in-law Kermit Ulrich, Don Hagenbuch, and Max Wiley, sisters-in-law Mary Kay Schenkel and Maxine Wiley, and a daughter-in-law, Holly Sale.
