William E. West Sr., who was born May 13, 1929, to Hubert and Addie May West, passed Sept. 22, 2018.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Waneta. He served in the United States Navy. William was self-employed and operated and owned West Auto Body and Frame Shop at 1032 8th Ave., from the late '50s until 1977. He also owned and operated West Communications, a commercial radio service, from 1980 until 2000. He also was a contract instructor for Ivy Tech, instructing a vocational class at the United States Penitentiary during the 1980s. William was an avid amateur radio operator from 1969 until his death, WB9FCP.
He also enjoyed working on personal computers, spending days building and tinkering with computers he built. He was a master mechanic and fabricator able to fix anything. He enjoyed spending time with his family, camping, fishing, and traveling. William was also a 50-year past master and 50-year member of Humboldt 42, and a proud 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason from the Valley of Terre Haute.
He is survived by his son, William E. West Jr. and his wife Donetta J. West of Terre Haute; one daughter, Jacquelyn Kirk and her husband Tom of Rosedale; one granddaughter, Dawn Marie Neice; and great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Ann and her companion Kyle Daugherty, Ashton Joseph, Jade Roslyn, Paige Renee and Thomas Gilbert.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2018, in Greiner Funeral Home, 2005 North 13th Street, Terre Haute. Pastor Larry Spear will officiate. Masonic services will be at 12:45 p.m. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until service time. If friends so desire, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Disabled Veterans Association.
